Read the board before the answer

This 5×5 example needs 5 cats: one in every row, column and connected region. Begin with the given cats, identify their full rows, columns and regions, and exclude immediate neighbors. The diagrams below use the exact original puzzle data.

Try the playable version first if you want to avoid spoilers. The starting diagram shows only fixed cats. The step-by-step section follows the verified trace in order; it does not invent a shortcut from the final arrangement.

Follow each deduction

A placement step identifies the only candidate left in its group. An elimination step names a lock or a common-neighbor argument. A green outline identifies the candidate or the cells involved; × marks show exclusions established so far.

Check the before-step state rather than comparing only with the final answer. A candidate can disappear because of several earlier constraints. When you cannot reconstruct a premise, return to the previous step and find which placement or exclusion made it true.

Transfer the method to another board

After the 5 cats are placed, check rows, columns, regions and touching again. A completed diagram is only valid when every quota and the no-touch condition hold. The proof for this example is also replayed by an independent validator.

The linked next puzzle has its own region layout and reasoning. It is not a rotated or recolored copy of this example. Size controls the number of cells; select a difficulty based on the deductions you want to practice.

Your starting point

This original 5×5 board has 5 connected regions and 1 fixed cat. The smallest region is A, with 3 cells. Start by ruling out every other cell in each fixed cat’s row, column and region, plus its immediate neighbors.

The verified route below uses 4 forced placements and 1 candidate-elimination step after the givens. Region sizes: A: 3 · B: 4 · C: 6 · D: 9 · E: 3. These are observations about this board, not a guarantee that a smaller region always contains the next move.

Read each diagram in sequence. Cats and × marks in the before-state come from earlier deductions. Green outlines identify the current observation. Open the final answer only when you want the spoiler.

Step-by-step walkthrough

1Check region B

region B has only one remaining candidate: row 2, column 1. Every other cell is excluded by earlier placements or deductions. Place the cat here.

2Exclude common neighbors

The cat in row 3 must occupy one of row 3, column 4; row 3, column 5. Each of row 4, column 4; row 4, column 5 touches every candidate, so none can hold a cat.

3Check row 4

row 4 has only one remaining candidate: row 4, column 2. Every other cell is excluded by earlier placements or deductions. Place the cat here.
